It was another warm night. A pale moon dominated the evening sky. Stars flickered on and off. A dark bird spread its wings and soared upward as a light breeze chased itself through the trees. It was a night for stargazers and lovers. But for Jonah and Jenny, it was a night for vigilance and stealth.

They couldn’t talk much for fear of their voices carrying in the motionless air, but just being together under the night sky produced a certain kind of intimacy, a cocoon of isolation from the rest of the world, like being in a dark theatre watching life at a distance.

Jonah felt comfortable with Jenny, although he had some concerns about how well she could handle herself in a physical confrontation with the thieves. Hopefully it wouldn’t come to that. Two officers with guns and the element of surprise should be enough to subdue the two men without a fight.

Jenny took the first shift. While she watched the house, Jonah lay there in the sleeping bag. At one point, he studied her outline against the night sky. She seemed young and fragile to him, in spite of her jauntiness and air of confidence. Being with her made him realize just how much he missed by not being in a relationship. Living in Koloshan limited the dating pool and made it next to impossible to have a casual relationship without everyone in the village speculating about whether it would end in marriage. It wasn’t that he was against marriage, but he liked being independent and was happy living alone with no one to answer to. Still, if the right person came along—

A car sped down the street, the engine noise unnaturally loud against the backdrop of nature’s subtle night sounds. Jonah closed his eyes and tried to sleep, but thoughts of Mike and Lou intruded. Neither man was pleased with the stakeout, but for different reasons. Lou didn’t want to stay at Mike’s again. He said he felt like he was intruding on their family life. And Mike argued that he should be able to take care of his family on his own. By Koloshan standards, they were tough men, not afraid of a fight, men used to standing up for themselves. But from Jonah’s perspective, they had given up the right to be left to their own devices after they put others in jeopardy.

Earlier, he had explained the situation to Jenny, making it clear that at this point it was all guesswork; he didn’t have any solid evidence. Together, the two of them speculated about scenarios that explained what might have happened if Will was the one who ended up with the smaller artifacts and the payment money. One possibility was that the three local men plotted together to keep the smaller artifacts and sell them separately, assuming the person behind the theft wouldn’t come after them for fear of exposing their own involvement.
